The time we have conquered the human knowledge that explores even the secrets of atom and molecules running through the veins of this vast universe of ours. We already arrived into a conclusion of having an infinite, round a clock and a 25-hour human living. From tribes to mansions, from cans to handy phones, from stones to fiber optics yes, we have converted the impossible to possible. We have transformed the backward state of living into the advancement of human stature, describing the world as an auspicious depot of wisdom. So why not having a digital movie actress, known in the public as a real one?

She is Simone. Her name means “simulation one”, which is played by Rachel Roberts. She has been an overnight sensation, being admired by women and also wanted by men. She is everywhere, wins Oscars and awards of all kinds.

Simone was created by a desperate and failing Hollywood director named Victor Taransky, which is played by Al Pacino. He was just forced to think fast when his star named Nicole Anders, which is played by Winona Ryder walks out on him on the film set.

Well fortunately, he successfully made this digital personality and the first totally believable synthetic actress. She never forgets her lines, never commit any mistakes for the press to create a stir about and never talk back. Simone is really eccentric that she despises public appearances and refuses to be on the set with her co-actors. But of course there is one problem, the more attention she gets and her director; the harder it is to keep the secret buried.

This film was a masterwork from the creator of “The Truman Show” none other than Andrew Niccol. I just found out that director Andrew Niccol was really interested in such reality-type shoes and to further corroborate this point of view, we can see in the film “The Truman Show” that he used to reveal it in the public as a reality-based show, but the main objective of it is to veil the reality for Truman without his full knowledge at all. Well in this film “Simone”, Niccol created a fake but convincing personality to the public but we all know that the time will come that all secrets will be revealed. “Simone” is just quite different in “The Truman Show” by means of their endings. The Truman Show ended up by reveling the truth on the lead star while in the film Simone, victor Taransky’s daughter did some ways to cover up the controversies about his father. That is why Simone is still known as a real Hollywood actress in the public.

The plot of the movie is a big strange because it is really hard to believe that we have a synthetic actress that has everything that a celebrity must have for, the brain, the looks, and good attitude. They also used typical way of narration in the film for easy understanding. The shots are not realistic because the director is just attaching Simone in the big screen without her presence in the scene. The colors are well-enhanced in order to make the viewer believe that Simone is a real actress. The production design is also customized in order to satisfy the scene of imitating Simone as an ordinary one. The viewer would feel a sense of praise in almost every movie he did starring Simone as the lead role that received plaque of recognitions in numerous award giving bodies.

We cannot fully trust high technology because they do not have the faculty of reasoning. Unlike us, they do not have the capacity to think. And the worst of all, they are eternally unpredictable.

We should not totally rely on technology. Do not wait for the time when all of us are already trapped in it. We created these technologies. That is why we should be the ones to manipulate them, and not them deceiving us. Just like “Simone”, the most desirable woman in the world but she lives only in our dreams.

(A Film Review)

Hello Philippines and hello world! This seems to be one of the most unforgettable punch lines of all times. It is from the phenomenal foreign-based reality show “The Pinoy Big Brother” which is originally from Endemol co-managed by the country’s largest network the ABSCBN. If there would be a film beautiful enough to fascinate and encourage someone to watch a reality show like the popular PBB, it would be Peter Weir’s melodramatic masterpiece none other than “The TRUMAN Show”.

“The TRUMAN Show”, which Peter Weir wrote, directed, and produced, tells of selfishness, sensitivity, curiosity, heartbreak, longing for freedom, the courage and strength it takes to seek the truth. At the center of Peter Weir’s huge production is a man named “Truman” which is played by Jim Carrey, the lead star of the show but he doesn’t even know. He wowed critics and audiences alike as unwitting Truman Burbank in this marvel from a movie from director Peter Weir about a man whose life is a nonstop television show.

Truman doesn’t realize that his quaint hometown is a giant studio set run by a visionary producer/director/creator named “Christof” which is played by Ed Harris, that folks living and working there are Hollywood actors, that even his incessantly bubbly wife named “Meryl” which is played by Laura Linney is also a contract player. Gradually, Truman gets wise as the years pass by. And what he does about his discovery really made us laugh, cry and cheered up like few film stories ever have.

The whole plot is a big mystery because it is quite hard to imagine a man, whose life is a 24-hour program, living in a city inside a huge studio and through understanding of the whole idea comes along after you finish watching the movie. A lot of questions are expected to arise the mind of the viewer while watching it. It also stripped the film of its real beauty, a beauty visible in its aesthetics, story, and storytelling techniques.

We all know that a film always tells a story, but it doesn’t end there. It also matters how the story is being told. They used conventional manner of narration in the film for easy understanding. Some of the shots are realistic and the other effects are not. The colors are enhanced to the greatest emphasis possible, making the viewer find himself somewhere along in real outside world. The entire film is told in a spectacular way, in accordance to its plot and theme, which is further enhanced by the riveting musical score. The production design is also tailored to suit the drama of heartbreak, the viewer would feel a sense of pity in almost every place in the whole set: the office’s elevator, his home, in the hospital, along the shore, most especially in the storm scene when he really suffered and almost die. These elements only prove that this film is not just only for entertainment but also for us to realize the true meaning of being a human in this world with a mind that can think, heart that can be hurt and the ability that can break the strong walled boundaries.

As if the story is not enough to make you look inside yourself that you are being used and manipulated. In the said movie the creator implies that he made Truman a superstar, being watched in the longest running show by 220 countries worldwide in 24 hours a day, but instead he just encountered injustice and inhumane without his full knowledge, just like losing a game without any given chances at all for you to redeem yourself.

Many people are fans of reality-based television program that is why “The Truman Show” presents as a perfect alternative show for all ages. And besides, the moral content of this film is rich and well-crafted. Not difficult to be understood and rest assured that it delivers the goods. Suddenly, it has become an instant classic and a film not to be missed.
